The increased usage of online cancer support groups as a resource for health-related information and social support has sparked numerous discussions about the role of online support in healthcare. However, little is known about the role of social-networking groups focused on supporting adolescents and young adults (AYAs) dealing with cancer. The current investigation report findings from a content analysis designed to explore how AYAs use an online support group to meet their psychosocial needs. Overall, members of the community focused on exchanging emotional and informational support, coping with difficult emotions through expression, describing experiences of being an AYA dealing with cancer through language (metaphors), enacting identity through evaluations of the new normal (life with and after cancer), and communicating membership as an AYA with cancer. This study highlights the unique needs of the AYA cancer community and offers a preliminary roadmap for practitioners, and network members, such as family and friends, to attempt to meet the needs of this unique community.

This article reports on a series of studies of the false alarm effect (FAE), suggesting that individuals’ perceptions that relational partners are fabricating and exaggerating their health conditions are negatively associated with perceptions of health condition credibility, which in turn are associated with decreases in individuals’ protective behaviors and attitudes. In Study One (N = 216), we took a mixedmethods approach to test an initial model predicting that health condition credibility mediates associations between individuals’ perceptions that partners are fabricating and exaggerating and the extent to which individuals provide support, seek information about the condition, feel efficacious in their ability to assist partners, and believe that the condition is serious. We also analyzed open-ended responses to parse the source(s) of credibility lost when individuals believe partners are fabricating and exaggerating their health conditions. We found that they express doubt not only about the credibility of the health condition itself, but also about their partner’s credibility in terms of trustworthiness. We then refined our conceptual model to account for these two sources of credibility and tested it with a path model in a second study utilizing a nationally representative sample (N = 508). Results supported our hypotheses. We discuss the implications of this research for how people present themselves as ill in personal relationships, and what happens when these presentations are unconvincing.

Although research shows family members can influence each other's diet and exercise behaviors, the specific strategies that most effectively motivate individuals to enact healthy behaviors have not been revealed. Toward this goal, this study employed confirmation theory to assess how the quality of weight management (WM) communication between 107 mother-teen dyads was related to their diet and exercise behaviors as well as their subjective perceptions of the productivity of WM conversations. Confirmation theory proposes two components of confirmation: acceptance and challenge. Analyses revealed that accepting and challenging communication were both positively related to the perceived productivity of WM conversations. However, more complex associations emerged for diet and exercise. Acceptance was more helpful in motivating better eating habits for mothers with low health motivation and teens with high health motivation. For exercise, challenge was helpful in motivating teens with higher sensitivity about communicating about weight issues; however, counter to predictions, challenge was negatively related to exercise for teens with low health motivation and low sensitivity. These interactions, however, explained less variance than analyses for perceived effectiveness and satisfaction.

Health and psychosocial outcomes for young adults affected by cancer have not improved in decades, partially due lack of support and information tailored to this age group. Considering some of their greatest and most frequently reported unmet needs revolve around nutrition and exercise, it is important to understand how they handle information about food and fitness in the course of managing their cancer experiences. Using the theory of illness trajectories as a framework, we explored how the “work” associated with living with a chronic illness such as cancer impacts, and is impacted by, nutrition and exercise concerns. An analysis of discussion board threads in an online support community for YAs shows that nutrition and exercise affect the work YAs do to manage their illness, everyday life, biographical, and communication tasks. Further, this study expands illness trajectory work to a younger demographic than most prior research, helps validate the recent development of the “communication work” variable, and explores the interplay of mediated and interpersonal communication channels.

This study explores how women learn effective communication styles through socialization as well as the strategic choices that women make when performing face-threatening acts at work. We argue that communication style choices are gendered and learned primarily through trial and error. We also argue women learn to perform assertiveness in ways that manage the tension between their personal and professional identities, concluding that participants strategically enact assertiveness by consciously considering gender, relationship, context, and goals.

Twitter provides a direct method for political actors to connect with citizens, and for those citizens to organize into online clusters through their use of hashtags (i.e., a word or phrase marked with # to identify an idea or topic and facilitate a search for it). We examine the political alignments and networking of Twitter users, analyzing 9 million tweets produced by more than 23,000 randomly selected followers of candidates for the U.S. House and Senate and governorships in 2010. We find that Twitter users in that election cycle did not align in a simple Right-Left division; rather, five unique clusters emerged within Twitter networks, three of them representing different conservative groupings. Going beyond discourses of fragmentation and polarization, certain clusters engaged in strategic expression such as “retweeting” (i.e., sharing someone else’s tweet with one’s followers) and “hashjacking” (i.e., co-opting the hashtags preferred by political adversaries). We find the Twitter alignments in the political Right were more nuanced than those on the political Left and discuss implications of this behavior in relation to the rise of the Tea Party during the 2010 elections.
